From the Series x Statements on Art by x Artists (12.31.05, rev. 2.19.06)

The most freeing day for me as a writer was when I realized the power of quotes.

The day I realized

that line breaks were a convention,

as was the distinction between prose and poetry.

That not all my writing has to be art.

That not all art has to be good.

That it doesn't matter if people read my work.

That, as Walker Percy said, symbol-making is

the most natural of human activities.

All that matters is to what purpose.

Creation is a process of self-understanding.

In externalizing one's thought, we gain the reflexive power

to see ourselves, if not as others do, at least a little more

clearly.

To no longer "muddle about."
